Vintage
Trailer Camp at the Dunes ’05 Report
A
handful of campers arrived early on Wednesday to enjoy the good weather,
friends, and to set up their campsites.
Throughout the weekend, approximately 80 vintage trailers brought
with them enthusiastic, fun-loving trailer enthusiasts and their families
who were able to share their stories of preservation and restoration of
their own vintage trailers. Trailer
items were shared, traded, or acquired throughout the weekend.
Saturday morning, Brad’s 1931 Helm’s Bakery truck provided
entertainment and nostalgia delivering donuts to our group.
Other campers also joined in on this activity by coming out of
their huge motorhomes at the sound of the familiar Helm’s whistle;
(everyone -- of a certain age, of course -- had their Helm’s story to
tell). Rally shirts were sold
out by
6:30
AM
Saturday morning. Perfect
weather helped bring a steady stream of visitors to the public open house
on Saturday. Although many people were unable to acquire sites this year,
they were still able to come out for the day to visit us.
Trailerites came to the rally from
California
,
Texas
,
Arizona
, and
New
Mexico
. Airstream,
Teardrop, Westwood, Shasta, Spartanette, Silver Streak, Boles Aero, Pierce
Arrow, Yellowstone, Kampmaster, Jewel, Streamline, Hanson, Forester, Kit
Chateau, Rainbow, Flying Cloud, Mobile Sportsman, Siesta, Terry Rambler,
and home construction were just a few of the trailer-types represented
from the 1930’s – 1980’s. Vintage
and antique cars often accompanied the trailers.
For various reasons, the three expected 1930’s Bowlus trailers
were unable to make the trip (if you’re in to vintage trailers, you are
familiar with the reasons for having to change your travel plans or
trailer depending upon the trailer’s “cooperation”). A
few trailers made their newly restored debut to the delight of their
owners and appreciative onlookers. Small
potlucks were organized among some campsites Saturday evening; one group
even enjoyed having their dinner catered.
Jill shared her slide collection of vintage trailers and boats in
the evening. Three families
even stayed in the cabins to be a part of the rally.
Just as a few campers arrived early, about the same number stayed
on for an extra day. What a
wonderful weekend shared by new friends, ol’ friends, family members,
and the curious!
